Salt chlorine generators convert salt into chlorine for the sanitization of swimming pool water. They use a process called electrolysis to produce pure chlorine from a tiny amount of salt. The good news is, the salt can be used over and over again.
The Science Behind Salt Chlorination
A salt chlorinator has two main parts: the salt cells that convert salt to chlorine, and the control box which directs the cell when to start and how long to continue producing chlorine.
Installed on the return line, salt cells (also known as electrolytic converters) treat the water in the swimming pool. The salt cells must be installed after your pump, heater, and filter.
The control box generates a harmless electric charge that converts the dissolved sodium into chlorine as the water flows through the salt cell. The return jets then evenly distribute the newly chlorinated pool water. Once the chlorine has sanitized the pool water, it converts back to salt. This cycle repeats automatically.

The salt added to the water of a pool continues to cycle between chlorine and salt indefinitely. It is never consumed, and it does not evaporate. The only time you need to replenish the salt in a swimming pool is when it’s lost through backwashing or splashing out.

Yes. The salt or minerals, in the form of magnesium chloride, are converted into chlorine by the chlorinator’s electrolytic plates. This chlorine then kills all contaminants and prevents bacteria from forming.
Will my water be salty?
No. The salt level in your swimming pool water is about the same as in a teardrop. Saltwater pools should have little or no taste when the salt level is maintained properly.
Do I still have to buy store-bought chlorine?
No. Using salt chlorinators for swimming pools can help reduce or eliminate your need to purchase chlorine. The swimming experience is dramatically improved in salt chlorinated pools.
